Frequently Asked Questions
Bas relief plaques are crafted from solid cast bronze and feature hand-sculpted three-dimensional portraits that project slightly from the background. They offer a timeless, dimensional tribute, primarily honoring individuals through finely sculpted likenesses.
Bas relief is most commonly used to create portraits of individuals, either formal or casual. We can also sculpt multiple people together (such as couples or groups). Pets and animals can also be captured with care and detail in bronze bas relief.
Cast bronze plaques with bas relief sculptures are extremely durable and ideal for long-term outdoor installation. A protective clear coat is applied initially, and over time, a rich natural patina develops, enhancing the sculpture without affecting its detail.
We recommend a minimum plaque size of 16" × 20" for a single portrait to allow for sufficient sculptural detail. Larger plaques such as 18" × 24" or 24" × 36" are excellent for even greater dimensional refinement. The sculpted portrait typically ranges from 8" to 18" tall, but can be larger if needed.
Yes. In addition to the bas relief portrait, plaques can feature: - Raised lettering (names, dates, quotes) - Background textures (stippled, pebble, etc.) - Logos, seals, or decorative borders
The bas relief process follows two stages of proof approval: - First, you receive a layout proof showing the text, layout, scale, and a placeholder for the portrait (using the source photo) - After you approve and submit the final balance payment, we proceed to hand-sculpt the clay model - Once the clay is complete (typically 2–3 weeks), we send a photo of the clay for your approval - Up to two rounds of revisions are included to refine the sculpture; additional revisions may incur charges - After final clay approval, the plaque moves into casting and finishing, with shipment approximately 4–6 weeks later
Our bas relief portraits are artistically interpreted from your submitted photograph. While they capture primary facial features, expressions, and major details, they are intended as artistic representations, not photorealistic replicas. - Very fine elements (hair texture, subtle expressions) depend on size and sculptor discretion - If ultra-specific details are critical, Photo Relief may be a better option
Please provide a high-resolution, well-lit, clear photo — ideally forward-facing or slightly angled. Important guidelines: - Details not visible in the photo cannot be reinterpreted - Multiple reference photos (if available) can help the artist - Portraits are sculpted "by sight" — emotional nuance or intangible expressions cannot be guaranteed - We ask for specific, actionable feedback during the revision stages (Example sculpt notes for reference ➔ https://www.dropbox.com/s/ilk4w1f9mstgqtq/sculpt%20notes.pdf?dl=0)
Bas relief offers true three-dimensional sculpture, artistic depth, and hand-finished quality — ideal for prestigious tributes. Photo relief is flatter, created from digital processing of photos, and is faster and more economical when high sculptural depth is not needed.
Typical timelines: - Layout proof: 1–2 weeks after deposit - Clay sculpt: 2–3 weeks after balance payment - Revisions (if needed): add time accordingly - Casting and finishing: 4–6 weeks after final clay approval Total timeline is typically 8–10 weeks from deposit to shipping. Early planning is recommended, especially for unveiling events.
