Frequently Asked Questions
Etched copper plaques are made by chemically etching recessed lettering and artwork into solid copper sheets. The result is a rich, reddish-brown plaque with fine detail, ideal for artistic or commemorative applications. Recessed areas are typically paint-filled, while the surface is left polished or brushed for contrast.
Copper offers a more reddish tone compared to bronze’s brown-gold and brass’s yellow-gold. While all three can be etched, copper develops a more dramatic natural patina over time — often turning darker or even green. It's favored for its bold, organic look and is often used in historical or artistic applications. However, like brass, copper is less suited to fully exposed outdoor use than bronze or stainless steel.
We offer custom sizing, typically up to 24″ × 36″, and standard thicknesses of ⅛″ and ¼″, depending on plaque size and mounting method. We'll help determine the appropriate thickness and dimensions based on your layout and installation conditions.
Etched copper plaques can be installed outdoors, but they are best suited for interior or sheltered exterior locations. When used outside, copper will oxidize and change color more quickly than other metals. A clear protective coating is applied to slow this process, but over time, a natural patina will form.
Mounting options include: - Blind studs for secure wall mounting (¼″ thickness required) - Screw-through face (rosettes not typically used) - Double-sided tape for small, indoor plaquesWe’ll help select the best mounting based on your wall type and plaque size.
Etched copper is perfect for detailed line art, serif fonts, and formal or vintage aesthetics. Paint-filled recessed areas can be colored black, white, or custom-matched for contrast. We also offer UV printed copper plaques for full-color artwork and indoor display needs.
Yes. Etched copper plaques are commonly used in museums, universities, public buildings, and private installations. Their warm appearance and evolving patina make them ideal for historical or artistic tributes, where character and individuality are important.
